Born in the mountainous Monadnock Region of New Hampshire, in a hand-crafted cabin without running water or television, Zachary has always been deeply immersed in the natural world. The pull of adventure took him to many remote corners of the Earth as he grew older, hungry to experience firsthand the diverse cultures and delicate ecosystems he had long marveled at in National Geographic magazines.

At University Zachary studied Political Science and minored in Cultural Anthropology, spending several semesters studying internationally and conducting fieldwork in Europe, China, India, Nepal, and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Whether he was living with Tibetan farmers in the Himalaya, sharing a fresh kill with Maasai warriors in Tanzania, or locked eyes with a polar bear in the Arctic north, Zachary has always felt most alive when pushing beyond his comfort zone.

As a self-taught photographer, Zachary's first camera was a 35mm film camera simply to document his travels, but before long he became fascinated by a photograph's significance, and ability to artfully convey a story, and emotions, where words often fall short. His photography continues to evolve, and Zachary has been displayed, published, and awarded in a variety of galleries, articles, and magazines.

photographer biography

"To take a photograph is to hold one's breath when all faculties converge in a face of fleeing reality. It is at that moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy."
              - Henri Cartier-Bresson

Artist Statement:

Modernization, despite its many benefits, has rapidly detached us from thousands of years evolving symbiotically with our environments. Many in the developed world today believe the illusion that we have advanced beyond our need for wilderness, and have lost sight of our intrinsic participation in the ecosystems that sustain us. Many don't identify as "outdoorsy," and see nature as a destination for a weekend getaway. Yet we are all inherently intertwined in a web of interdependence. My intention is to illuminate the ancestral connection we share with the natural world that supports us. By immersing myself into the environment, working not as an extraneous observer but rather as an integral element in that environment, a tangible re-connection with the wild is felt-- a language older than words; nothing spoken yet the transmission is profound. I feel that I've been successful as a photographer when I'm able to capture and convey fragments of this cosmic language in an image.
